I am writing as one of your constituents to ask you to act on various amendments to the Criminal Justice Bill, which seek to change the law relating to abortion, and introduce a new criminal offence on ‘conversion practices’.

Please support amendment NC15, to lower the statutory abortion time limit from 24 to 22 weeks, and NC41, which would equalise legal protections for preborn babies with Down's syndrome. These amendments recognise both that the viability of unborn babies is steadily improving (from as early as 22 weeks), and that babies with Down's Syndrome should not be treated as second-class citizens.

Please also support NC115, which would ensure that women have in-person consultation with a medical professional before they take abortion pills. This safeguard was in place until the introduction of the home abortion scheme during the pandemic. Reinstating in-person consultation will help protect women by providing the opportunity to accurately assess gestational age, as well as the possibility of coercion and life-threatening complications that have led to tragic cases of women ingesting pills late in pregnancy.

I would urge you to oppose amendment NC1, to remove legal accountability for women who self-induce abortions, and NC40 to completely decriminalise abortion up to the statutory abortion limit. These amendments would remove the safeguarding effect of the current law, which also recognises that abortion is a complex matter involving two lives – both of which should be considered and protected.

On the separate issue of ‘conversion practices’, it is worrying to see NC90 from Alicia Kearns MP. As a Christian, I strongly oppose violent, abusive, and coercive behaviour, and harmful actions towards people who identify as gay, or trans. Thankfully, such actions are already illegal. Ms Kearns amendment threatens to criminalise people acting in good faith, including religious leaders, parents, doctors, and feminists.

As legal experts have pointed out in recent months, this amendment is highly subjective, making its potential scope very wide. Loving parents who counsel a child against assuming a new gender identity could be caught. As could church leaders engaging in ordinary pastoral work. Doctors who advise patients against ‘gender affirming’ drugs and surgery are also under threat. Please oppose NC90.
