Premier League to limit betting sponsorship on football shirts

Premier League clubs have agreed to limit betting sponsorship on the front of football shirts from the end of the 2025/26 season, according to media reports.

It means the Premier League will become the first sports league in the UK to take such a voluntary measure to curb gambling advertising.

Logos from gambling firms will still be permitted on shirt sleeves and around stadiums. Clubs will still be allowed to secure betting sponsorship up until the deadline.

Campaigners have expressed disappointment that the changes do not go far enough.

Eight top-flight clubs currently have gambling companies on the front of their shirts.

The UK Government is due to publish its gambling white paper imminently after its review of gambling legislation.

Earlier this month, a backbench MP was caught in a sting operation offering gambling firms access to ministers.

CARE has called for wholesale changes to gambling laws, including a 5% mandatory levy which would means betting firms giving a proportion of their income to research and treatment for gambling related harms.

Director of Communications and Engagement, James Mildred, said:

"On the one hand, it's good to see the Premier League take some action to curb betting advertising. It's better than simply waiting and doing nothing. But the reality is this action falls some way short of what's needed. Given the influence football clubs have, especially on young fans, what's really needed is a total ban on betting sponsorship which is muddying the beautiful game."
