Trans guidance for schools to be delayed

The UK Government will miss its own deadline to produce new transgender guidance for schools in England after the Attorney General said parts of the guidance may be unlawful.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak had promised the advice before the summer holidays which start this week for many schools.

The guidance was expected to address what schools should do if a child wanted to change their name, use different pronouns or socially transition.

Ministers were reportedly considering whether to advise against allowing social transitioning altogether.

But attorney general, Victoria Prentis, said an outright ban would be unlawful. In order to stop social transitioning altogether, legislation would be needed.

The Department for Education will publish draft guidance for consultation before the final guidance, which will be non-statutory, will be issued.

No new deadline has been set.
