Wales home abortions measures to continue indefinitely

A Member of the Welsh Senedd has spoken out after the Welsh Government quietly announced that home abortions measures would carry on indefinitely.

Introduced in a rush two years ago because of the Covid-19 pandemic, some MSs and campaigners expressed concerns about the safety implications.

While England will continue with home abortions until 21 August 2022, the plan at the moment is for the scheme to end after that point.

Now, Clwyd West Senedd Member, Darren Millar has spoken out:

“I’m bitterly disappointed that the Minister made an announcement to extend what we all hoped would be only temporary arrangements for abortions without the need to see a medical professional in person,”

Mr Millar continued:

“Obviously, they are significant changes to the permanent abortion regime, and there are many people who have contacted me to say that they are very concerned about risks to women’s health as a result of these changes, and indeed the prospect that people can be coerced into taking abortion medication.”

Home abortion measures allow women and girls to take two abortion pills at home, following an online consultation.

A CARE spokesperson commented:

“Our primary concern with home abortion policies is that it removes any control over who takes the pills, where they are taken, whether they are taken properly and whether they are genuinely safe.

“Evidence has been found showing abortion providers putting women at real risk by failing to carry out basic checks before sending abortion pills by post.

“Moreover, studies have shown that there can be an increased chance of complications when abortion pills are taken.

“We would urge the Welsh Government to think again.”
