CARE launches NI Assembly Election Website

Stormont General

With Northern Ireland Assembly Elections just six weeks away, today CARE launched a bespoke election website.

Featuring a list of candidates and key information on causes that many Christians in Northern Ireland will care deeply about, it’s a great resource to help inform voters.

There’s also content which explains why at CARE we’re passionate about Christians being involved in the political process.

One key way to be light and salt is to prayerfully consider who to vote for, looking at the party manifestos to see what they say about key causes.

The site also features a blog and a list of hustings which may be of interest to voters across Northern Ireland.

About the election

The Northern Ireland Assembly elections will be held on Thursday 5 May. The Assembly is elected using a system of Proportional Representation (PR) known as the Single Transferable Vote (STV).

Voters elect 90 members of the legislative assembly, otherwise known as MLAs. Five assembly members are elected by voters from the 18 constituencies across NI.

Northern Ireland has a power-sharing institutions, established under the Good Friday Agreement. The Executive consists of a First Minister and deputy First Minister, nominated respectively by the largest and second largest political parties in the Assembly.

Despite their titles, the two roles have equal powers and oversee the executive committee which is made up of the other ministers. Ministers of the Executive, apart from the Minister of Justice, are nominated by the political parties in the NI Assembly.

The Minister of Justice is appointed by a nomination made by the First and deputy First Minister and is then approved by a cross-community resolution of the Assembly.
